Who We Are

The North Shore Soup Kitchen was founded by volunteers in 1989 when it became apparent that hunger was not limited to developing countries or inner city ghettos, but was right here on Long Island. We are staffed by more than 100 volunteers who serve a hot meal three days a week to hungry people in the Glen Cove area. These dedicated workers cook, serve and clean up after meals. They also work behind the scenes, ordering supplies, writing our newsletter, acknowledging donations, sorting donated clothing, and keeping our books. Our Pick Up People (P.U.P.S) collect donated food every serving day.

Volunteers make a special effort to make holidays festive for our guests. At Thanksgiving, donated turkeys and non-perishable food to complete a family meal are distributed to guests to take home. We also serve a delicious meal with all the trimmings on Thanksgiving Day. In December, hundreds of gifts are collected and distributed to our guests and their families.

For the past twenty years this program has been housed in the First Baptist Church of Glen Cove. They have generously provided the North Shore Soup Kitchen with the use of their Fellowship Room, kitchen, and storage space.
